Vines On The Bay

"Vines On The Bay"
5"x7" original watercolor on paper
Available by clicking here.

See! Told ya I couldn't stay away from my brushes!
Here in Northern Michigan we've slowly been turning into wine country. This beautiful little vineyard is located along Little Traverse Bay. Two years ago on our honeymoon my husband and I visited several vineyards in the area. We ventured up into the Leelanau Peninsula as well and found 45 North. I LOVE this winery! If you're looking for something to add to your trip ADD THIS PLACE! The location is beautiful, the people are very friendly and the wine is superb.
(The name comes from their being located on the 45th parallel.)
I raise my glass of 45 White to you in toast to the wonderful beginnings of a new year!

Merry Christmas!

"Off The Beaten Track"
5"x7"
Original watercolor on paper
Available by clicking here.

I wanted to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a wonderful beginning to their new year!

Above is a painting that may not strike everyone as "Christmassy" but as a country girl it feels like coming home to me. And what better at Christmas time than being able to go home to spend time with family?

I apologize for not posting much this month I've been quite busy with commission work and getting ready for my two shows next month.
Check out more on those by clicking the following links:

(Solo Show and Residency)

(My work will be displayed at the library January-March 2014)

I probably won't post again until 2014 but you never know, I might just get the urge to paint amidst all the hubbub. :)

Wishing everyone the very best! Have a wonderful holiday!

Book Illustrations

Time always seems to be in short supply this time of year. And the thing is I know its going to be that way so why do I still procrastinate? I hope the rest of you don't do this to yourselves!
Above are some images I recently did for my friend Suzy who is writing a book on public speaking. These are images for chapter breaks and were a lot of fun to draw! I plan to eventually color in the other images and then offer them as note cards. I'll post later with how to purchase those.
To learn more about Suzy Kedzierski and her work click here. She's really an amazing woman! Full of wonderful ideas and motivation. Check back later for a link to purchase the book!

Gathering Lavender

"Gathering Lavender'
8"x10" original watercolor on paper
Available at Forest Hills Fine Art Center in January 2014

Near where I live there is a lavender farm. I've mentioned it before; it's called Lavender Hills Farm. It's one of my favorite places to visit in the summer when the lavender is in bloom and the air is perfumed with its scent. This painting was inspired by one of my trips to the farm this year. It will be available for purchase at  Forest Hills Fine Art Center in Grand Rapids in January 2014.

During the month of December I'm showing my work at Charisma Salon in Traverse City, MI. I'm donating have of my profits from the show to the Father Fred Foundation
Also, you're invited to join us at Charisma Salon in Traverse City on Wednesday. We're making Christmas themed gift tags and bookmarks from 10am-2pm. Charisma Salon is located on Eighth Street near Benjamin Franklin's.

Strolling Through The Orchard

"Strolling Through The Orchard"
8"x10" original watercolor on paper
Available at Forest Hills Fine Arts Center January 2014

Every autumn since I was a kid my family would all pile into the car and we'd go to Knaebe's Apple Orchard. I love going to Knaebe's. There is always fresh baked pumpkin and apple doughnuts, apple cider and of course all the apples! Out back there are ponies to ride, tiny tractors to race. It's magical.
This past year we added to our "routine" and wandered around the orchard. The branches of the trees were weighed down under all of the apples. Long shadows were cast across the path. I HAD to paint it.
This painting will be included with my series "Simple Roots" to be shown at Forest Hills Fine Art Center in Grand Rapids in January.

Pet Portraits

"Otis"

I've mentioned it before but I recently got commissioned to do a few more so I thought I'd mention it again:
I do pet portraits!
These are great to give as gifts. People love their pets! It's also a nice memento after a pet has passed and is a nice way of keeping their memory alive.
Information on how commissions work can be found under the "Commissions" tab at the top of the page. If you have any questions or when you're ready to begin, email me at: sarahtuleart@yahoo.com or call me at (248) 977-0732.

Pumpkins Galore!

Pumpkins Galore!

$35
To purchase, click here

As we draw nearer to Thanksgiving I think of harvest time. We're past that point up here but it still rattles around in my brain and therefore, that's what I end up painting. It's an odd process I have.
Well, which pumpkin would you like? There's plenty to choose from! Just remember, you have to be able to carry it back to the car!

Through The Birches

"Through The Birches"

To go to the auction page, click here

Have I mentioned I like cross country skiing? I guess it's been on my mind lately.
Here in northern Michigan we're trapped somewhere between the end of fall and the beginning of winter. It's starting to pull more to the winter side of things but every once in a while we get a nice sunny "warm" day. Nature is teasing us.
This painting is up for auction on Daily Paintworks. The bidding starts at $35. To bid, click on the link beneath the image above and it will take you to the site.

Emerging From The Pines

To go to the auction site, click here.

It began snowing this week. Enough so that it's begun to stay on the ground. I love waking up to the first snowfall. Everything is dusted in a blanket of white and it feels clean and fresh. It gets me thinking about the coming holidays and I'm filled with a warm happy feeling.
But since the snow has found us I'll also be digging out my snowshoes and my skis. Obviously I have a while but you just never know what northern Michigan is going to give you!

Warm Winter Sunset

"Warm Winter Sunset"
5"x7" watercolor on paper
$35
Available by clicking here

This painting was done from some photos I took a few winters ago while out cross country skiing for the afternoon. It was getting late (4 in the afternoon...whooo!) and we were headed back to the car. I am always intrigued by shadows and I paused to take this picture because of them. The soft purples and blues on the snow against the vibrant colors of the sky were too good to pass up.

From now until Christmas my paintings are all reduced in price. If you're interested in purchasing I have them all listed on Daily Paintworks. You can find me on there by clicking on the little slideshow in the side bar to the right or by clicking here.

Ice Fishin Buddies

"Ice Fishin' Buddies"
5"x7" watercolor on paper
$35
Available by clicking here

My Dad used to take my sister and me out ice fishing when we were younger. Sadly time changes things but I have all the fond memories and who knows, maybe when the lake freezes over (and I mean like a foot of ice. I am NOT brave enough to go out on anything less than that) I'll ask him to take me out again.
As for these two, they sure have set up shop. They have their buckets to sit on, all bundled against the cold, tip ups ready to go and now they're gonna wait with a hot cup of coffee.

From now until Christmas my paintings are all reduced in price. If you're interested in purchasing I have them all listed on Daily Paintworks. You can find me on there by clicking on the little slideshow in the side bar to the right or by clicking here.

Follow The Leader

"Follow The Leader"
5"x7" watercolor on paper
$35
Available by clicking here

Soon a common phrase up here will be; "Great day to hit the slopes isn't it?" Hopefully its a little ways off yet but I know several people who are dusting off their skis and hoping to wake up to a winter wonderland.

Speaking of winter wonderlands, Christmas is coming up. I know, Thanksgiving is first, but in this business I always need to be looking ahead. If I paint it while it's going on I miss the people who would like to have that painting. Anyways, back to Christmas. Last year I cleaned out my studio about this time with paintings I had had from earlier that year. I'm doing that again this year. From now until Christmas my paintings are all reduced in price. If you're interested in purchasing I have them all listed on Daily Paintworks. You can find me on there by clicking on the little slideshow in the side bar to the right or by clicking here.

Newsletter

I've recently begun sending out a monthly newsletter highlighting what I'll be up to art-wise in the coming weeks. If you'd like to be included in my mailing list please comment on this post with your email address or email it to me at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com.
I like to keep the newsletters short and sweet so don't worry, it's not some long boring thing that goes on and on and on..... (at least I hope not!)

"Need A Lift?"
5"x7"
$85
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey or by clicking here

You know, I've never seen a painting done from the perspective of actually being ON the lift. And to be frank, the lift is one of my favorite parts. (Not a big skier.) So anyway, I figured I'd paint one!
Here we go up the hill! Aren't you glad we don't have to walk!

Boyne Highlands

"Boyne Highlands"
5"x7"
$85
Available by clicking here

It began snowing earlier this week. Winter is trying to force its way back in. It's cold out, noses are running, kleenex is essential. It's hard to stay positive when it feels like we just got rid of the snow. Summer always seems to slip through my fingers.
But on a fun note, ski resorts should be open again soon, we can bust out the hot coco and marshmallows and all will be well!
This painting is of a local resort; Boyne Highlands. Find out more about this winter escape by clicking on the name.

Clocktower Christmas

"Clocktower Christmas"
5"x7"
$85
Available by clicking here.

Petoskey is a town that is pretty all year. In the spring there are trilliums. In the summer the bay is dotted with the white sails of clippers as they cut through the water. Autumn explodes in glorious color. And then there's winter. A quiet blanket of snow covers the bay and everything seems to settle into a soothing rhythm.
But for the holidays the stops all come out again and the entire town becomes a winter wonderland. Lights bedeck the trees and lamp posts, wreaths adorn homes, and Christmas can pretty much be tasted on the air.
This painting "Clocktower Christmas" is of the local clocktower down on the bayfront. I thought it wold be fun to paint it all decked out for Christmas.

Creative Block

"Sailing Sunset"
8"x10"
Watercolor on Paper
Available by clicking here.

For some, it must be hard to imagine that an artist can hit a block. I mean, come on, we "draw pictures all day" right? But some days, you walk into the studio, look at the empty sheet of paper and walk back out again. Nothing comes to you. Painting doesn't sound like fun. And there is that laundry that needs to be done...
Now, I'm not saying I'm one of those who waits around for inspiration to strike. If I did that I'd hardly have any finished paintings and I'd certainly never get a series together to do a show. So I try to force it. Sometimes, when I have no urge to create, I paint a sunset.
It's simple: get something down on paper. A sunset to me is one of the easiest, most relaxing things to paint. Have you stared for long hours at sunsets? The sky is filled with colors each time the sun goes down. So you can really use which ever color strikes you!
Once I get my sunset down, the urge to create becomes a little stronger. (Usually). Then I can move on to things I have planned and meet my deadlines. It's really all a matter of getting those creative juices flowing.

Tonight at Northgoods in Petoskey a group show entitled "Colors Of Autumn" opens. Talented local artists will be displaying their fall inspired pieces. Come and see them! The show runs through the end of the month.
This is my piece that I will be entering into the show. I really enjoy walks through the autumn woods and birch trees are just the most beautiful thing come fall. The white against all the bright colors just adds to the crispness.

Christmas Cards

"Christmas Kiss"

"Christmas By The Bay"

Oh my, time has gotten away from me lately! I've been working on several projects and something always seems to be forgotten no matter how many lists I make. This time, it happened to be the blog.
I know it seems super early to some people but as an artist trying to stay up to date, I've had to start thinking about Christmas. Every year I design a few different cards and this year my theme is Petoskey. One card features the gazebo in Pennsylvania Park and the other features the frozen bay and the breakwall.
These cards are available for purchase and come in packs of 5 or you can buy a single. I can mix and match the two images if you'd like also.
To purchase, contact me at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com with information on which image you would like and how many. If you live in the Petoskey area look for them soon at local shops!

Seasonal

Northern Michigan is a seasonal place.
No matter the season, we're dependent on the tourists. In spring they come for the trilliums and to celebrate the greenery. In summer they come for the beaches, camping, shopping, sailing and open spaces. In fall they come to see the colors and in winter they come for skiing and snowmobiling.
However, usually after Labor Day things slow down quite a bit. The people don't come in droves anymore and shops slip into their off season hours. Some places, like the Cycling Salamander Gallery and Mackinac's Little Gallery close for the winter. It's a good option, saves money and makes them all the more special when they open again next spring.
The time of year has come for that so if you haven't been to these neat little gems tucked away in the north you should come see them! They're open for a few more weeks yet. They'd love to see you and you won't have to fight the crowds.
You can also click on the orange names under the photos to learn more about them.

Tunnel Of Trees (M-119)

North and South M-119 watercolor paintings
each 5"x7" matted to 8"x10"
$85 each
look for them at my booth at the Goodhart Market Days!
or you can contact me by email at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com
or call me at (248) 977-0732

Autumn is here! My favorite season of the year. The air is crisp and it's time to visit the apple orchard for cider and doughnuts. I love the trees in all of their glorious color.
Speaking of trees, if you've never done so (and even if you have) you should check out The Tunnel Of Trees this fall when you look for a spot to do a "color tour." A scenic heritage route that is about 28 miles long, enjoy trees in all their autumn splendor beginning just outside of Petoskey. If you choose you can travel through Harbor Springs, Goodhart and Cross Village all the way up to Sturgeon Bay Dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Some stops that I recommend:

Three Pines Studio and Legs Inn in Cross Village
Sturgeon Bay Dunes Shoreline

If you happen to be traveling the route on a Saturday stop by Goodhart General Store from 2-5:30 pm to experience Goodhart Market Days. Local farmers, craftspeople and artists will be displaying and selling their wares and is definitely something to see. I'll be there selling recent work and tiles.
Come see us!

Sailing The Regatta

"Sailing The Regatta"
8"x10" matted to 11"x14"
$160.00
For sale through artist,
to purchase either email me at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com or call at (248) 977-0732.

The Red Fox Regatta, which is the subject of this painting, began back in the 1970's as a friendly social event between two local yacht clubs. Over the years things got a little more competitive and they began racing each other to the rendezvous point in Horton Bay on Lake Charlevoix, where they shared dinner at the Red Fox Inn.
Now a days it is an annual event with sailors coming from all over the Great Lakes to participate.
I enjoy watching the sailboats here in the summer. Seeing their white sails flapping on the bay only adds to the magic of living in this town.

Above are the two designs I currently have. They are 4"x4" and are made locally for me by Little Traverse Tileworks. Scratch proof, they are perfect for a new back splash, trivet, coasters or simply to display (there is a little notch cut in the back for hanging).
Could make a great gift!
The images are from original watercolor paintings that I did this summer of the sailboats out on Little Traverse Bay here in northern Michigan.
If you'd like one (or more!) they are $15 each. Discounts possible on larger orders.

Pennsylvania Park Gazebo

"Pennsylvania Park Gazebo"
Watercolor and Pen
5"x7"
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey
(231) 347-1775

I like sitting in the gazebo in the park and watching the rain on warm summer days. I enjoy the water drumming gently on the roof and trickling down the woodwork. Its a comfortable feeling for me.
The gazebo also plays host to summer concerts in the park, picnicers and wedding ceremonies.

I'm currently working on a schedule for watercolor workshops and classes for this autumn/winter. I'm planning workshops and/or classes in Petoskey, Charlevoix, Gaylord and Sault Ste. Marie. If you know of a place in your town that would host a workshop I'd be glad to come to you! Just leave a comment and I'll see if I can work something out!
When I post the schedule in a few days you can find the information under "Classes and Workshops" at the top of the page.

Also, if you'd like a commission for someone as a Christmas present this year now is the time to start talking about it! For brief info look under my "Commissions" tab at the top of the page. For more information or to ask a question email me at: sarahtuleart@yahoo.com or call (248) 977-0732.

Terrace Inn

"Terrace Inn"
Watercolor and Pen
5"x7"
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey
(231) 347-1775

The Terrace Inn and Restaurant is located inside of the Bay View Association here in Petoskey. It's an intriguing old building full of character.
In October I happen to know that the local paranormal society is hosting an event here. It's called the Little Traverse Bay ParaFest and it's quite a big deal if you're in to that sort of thing. Tickets are available by checking out their site here.
But on a normal day when you aren't ghost hunting, the Terrace Inn is also quite beautiful and relaxing. It's been around since 1911 and has been a popular spot with resorters. It's located in a beautiful wooded neighborhood featuring homes from the 1800's. The bay is just a short walk away and if you need some encouragement...so is ice cream :)

Happy Friday the 13th! (only one more to go in 2013!)

The Roast and Toast is a popular hangout here in Petoskey. EVERYONE fits in here; from the ritsy to the poor college student. It's a fantastic local melting pot.
They serve an eclectic collection of coffee and tea drinks, sandwiches, soups and so forth. The atmosphere is wonderful. If you're ever in the area I recommend it!

Lavender

"Lavender Hills Farm"
8"x10"
Available at Northgoods Gallery in Petoskey

"Sea Of Lavender"
9"x12"
Available at Cycling Salamander Gallery in Charlevoix

I have an affinity for lavender. I find the scent to be absolutely glorious and own several products from a local farm that features such luxuries. Lavender Hill Farm is one of my favorite places to visit in the summer. It's located on Horton Bay road not far from Petoskey.
The top painting is of Lavender Hills Farm's field. It was also recently featured in "Sunday Crush," a blog portraying all of the good things in life. Click here to see the article.
If interested in purchasing either painting please contact the gallery by clicking on the link below the picture. However, if you'd like to deal directly through me I can be contacted at (248) 977-0732 or by email at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com.
