Cheboygan Crib Lighthouse

"Cheboygan Crib Light"
7"x5" Original Watercolor On Paper
To Buy This Painting Click Here

This cute little crib lighthouse sits at the mouth of the river in my hometown. In the summer, boaters come in from Lake Huron to travel the inland waterway and the beach is packed with swimmers.
I was feeling a bit homesick so I painted this to help. It surprises me sometimes, how very much paintings are a result of emotion.

Have A Great Weekend Everyone!

Parallel The Coast

"Parallel The Coast"
5"x7" Original Watercolor On Paper
Buy It By Clicking Here.

In Northern Michigan, in the summer, there is a familiar site out on the lakes; white sails that meander up and down the shoreline, visiting the small harbor towns.
I love watching them from the beach, my toes buried in the sand and the breeze blowing around me. I could sit there for hours with my sketchbook.

Grand Portal

"Grand Portal"
8"x10" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper
Available soon at Fuzzy Boyak Welcome Center in Munising!

This was an interesting painting to do. With the rocky cliff taking up most of it, I tried to make it interesting. The rock along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is beautiful and full of colors from all the minerals. This brave little kayaker ventured out into Lake Superior to get a closer look.

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse

"Eagle Harbor Light"
8"x10" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper
SOLD

This is the lighthouse at Eagle Harbor up in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is my favorite of the Michigan lighthouses (and there are quite a few!) It's been around for nearly 150 years safely guiding ships into Eagle Harbor from the temperamental waters of Lake Superior.

I really enjoy the rocks up in the Keweenaw.  I know it sounds like a funny thing to say but most people think of rocks as gray. A visit to nearly anywhere in the Keweenaw Peninsula will quickly prove this theory wrong. The rocks along the Lake Superior shoreline come in a multitude of colors and textures. Near Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor the rocks are lovely shades of browns and reds. As an artist it's fun to find all the colors that really make up the rock. That was my favorite part of this painting.

Cheboygan Crib Lighthouse

"Cheboygan Crib Light"
5"x7" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper
SOLD

Above is another of the recent commission projects I received. This is Cheboygan Crib Light, located on the shores of Lake Huron at the mouth of the Cheboygan River.
It is the beginning of Michigan's longest chain of lakes and rivers called the Inland Waterway. If you're a big boater it might be something of interest to you! I believe most people complete the trip in a weekend but you could definitely make it a longer trip and enjoy all the little towns along the way as well as some excellent fishing!

Destination Petoskey

Today I'm dropping off a bunch of new miniature watercolors at Northgoods in Petoskey!
These are some of my favorite places to visit when I'm in town. It's always a toss up whether to go for a drink at Roast and Toast or North Perk. Then I like to go for a walk; either down by the bay or along the Bear River, which is where the beautiful bridge is located.
One last place I always seem to find myself is Symon's General Store. I've talked about it before but if you ever make it to Petoskey it's a must see! They have a huge selection of cheeses and wines and lots of delicious Michigan made products!

Have A Great Weekend!

Trillium Minis

I think I'm trying to wish spring here. Hopefully it doesn't come and go too quickly!
One of the things I always look for in the spring is the trilliums. These beautiful white flowers grow in the woods where I like to go for walks. They cover the forest floor, up the sides of hills and down and make everything look mystical.
These two little minis are headed for Northgoods in Petoskey this weekend!

Petoskey Minis

A few more miniatures to take to Northgoods in Petoskey.
These tiny paintings are of some of my favorite places on Lake Street in Petoskey. Symons General Store is an awesome place to visit if you've never been, stocking all kinds of scrumptious foods and lots of Michigan made fare! Last fall I bought a chocolate covered potato chip candy bar here, It was amazing. So is there cheese counter come to think of it. Just go here. You'll love it.
North Perk is a relatively new coffee shop in the Petoskey area with a laid back vibe. Great place to meet with friends or spend the afternoon studying! It's also located right next to the park so the views are peaceful too!

I'm teaching a class this evening at Park City Gallery in Republic, Michigan. The classes are on-going every other Monday from 6-8 pm. If you're interested in joining us please let me or the gallery know! All materials are supplied. We'd love to have you!

Rowing At Dawn

"Rowing At Dawn"
5"x7" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper

I've been working on several things all at once these past few weeks. A few paintings have been finished in the in between moments but mostly I've been establishing classes and other events for this summer.
The above painting is one of three of mine that were accepted into the "Artist's Choice" group show at the Alberta House Gallery in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The show opens on the first and runs through the month of April. Many talented artists brought in work and it's sure to be a fabulous show!
"Rowing At Dawn," is one of those few paintings that came strictly from my imagination. Usually my work has some basis in reality whether it be from photos or personal experience. For this painting I wanted to use cool colors and ended up with a lake at sunrise. While this painting was still in the pencil stage I decided to add the rowboat. I really like how it turned out. Reminds me of summer camping trips in the Upper Peninsula.

I mentioned figuring out my summer schedule. Some of the things are still in the finalizing stages but if you're interested, let me know and I'll get you signed up!

Sunday, June 28th I'll be teaching an Introduction To Watercolors Class at Elvyn Lea Lodge in Boyne City. This beautiful lodge is nestled in the woods and is sure to provide bountiful inspiration! To sign up contact me at (248) 977-0732 or at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com. Info on this class is located under the "Classes and Workshops" tab at the top of the screen.

Beginning in late June I'll also be teaching a Watercolor Journaling Class for Charlevoix Circle Of Arts. Join me on Monday mornings from 10-Noon as we explore the beautiful Charlevoix area and capture moments in time on paper. Look for more info soon under my "Classes and Workshops" tab or by visiting the Circle of Arts webpage by clicking here.

Horton Bay General Store

First of all, for those of you that came to listen to my lecture last night at Charlevoix Circle Of Arts thanks so much for being there! I hope you had a good time and I enjoyed meeting and talking with you!
Secondly, in case you missed the lecture, part of what I talked about was my process. I know I've done posts on this in the past but I figured it was time for a new one. Many people tell me that it's interesting to see an artist's process and while it's everyday work to me, I do enjoy watching artists in other mediums work their magic. So if you'd like to see the process from start to finish on my latest painting "Horton Bay General Store" you can scroll through the images below.

Horton Bay General Store is a neat stop if  you're ever in the Petoskey/Charlevoix area. Located off of Horton Bay Rd, it shares a history with Ernest Hemingway, who spent much of his youth on nearby Walloon Lake and eventually got married in the tiny Horton Bay church. Mr. Hemingway references this store in his "Nick Adams" stories and it is part of the "Hemingway Heritage Trail" in the area.
This finished painting will be for sale soon at Northgoods in Petoskey.

The first step is penciling the whole thing in. I remove/add things from the reference photos and shuffle some things around.

When I have everything situated where I want it, I go over the pencil with my handy-dandy nano-liner pen. This pen is waterproof and won't blur when I add the watercolor.

Then I start coloring everything in like a coloring book. Some of the shading I add while the first layer is still wet so that it will bleed in to each other and have a softer effect. I skip around in my paintings (you can see I painted the sky and then moved to the bottom) and that's so I can keep working while I wait for areas to dry.

I slowly fill in and shade all of the areas. Sometimes, it takes several layers of paint to get the vibrant colors I like.

And voila! The finished painting! So nice to see the vibrant greens of summer (and lilacs!) while I'm waiting for the snow to melt.

Insight

I thought maybe I would try something new and try to actually show you how I work.  I took this little video while I was working on a painting yesterday afternoon. It is by no means of professional quality but I hope it is interesting to you.
The painting featured in the video clip is one that I am working on for Old Park City Gallery in Republic MI. My husband and I took a trip a few weeks ago to Munising and hiked out to Mosquito Beach on the Pictured Rocks trail. We ate lunch on a rock at the Mosquito River mouth and even made a chipmunk friend. Now, I know what you're thinking..."Mosquito Beach? Why would anybody EVER go there???" I assure you, at this time of year, with the winds coming off of Lake Superior there are ZERO mosquitoes. In fact, there aren't any bugs at all. It's a beautiful stretch of beach and a wonderful spot for an afternoon picnic.
I'm still working on the painting and will post again when it is finished.
