Above is a painting that may not strike everyone as "Christmassy" but as a country girl it feels like coming home to me. And what better at Christmas time than being able to go home to spend time with family?

I apologize for not posting much this month I've been quite busy with commission work and getting ready for my two shows next month.

As we draw nearer to Thanksgiving I think of harvest time. We're past that point up here but it still rattles around in my brain and therefore, that's what I end up painting. It's an odd process I have.

Sky Barn

This barn sits not far from my grandparent's place in southern Michigan. I love old barns and when I go to visit my family I inevitably end up driving all over the countryside photographing barns and farmland  for use in paintings later.

Lavender Hill Farm

This is Lavender Hill Farm. One of my favorite places to visit in the summer. It's located between Petoskey and Charlevoix off of Horton Bay road. Technically, I believe, it's address is Boyne City. 

The fields of lavender fill the air with a heavenly scent and you can hear the constant drone of bees as they pollinate. Lavender Hill Farm grows all of their plants without sprays or pesticides. They offer products such as lavender honey, lavender soap and many more options. It's definitely a place to check out if you're in the area!

Show Me Watcha Got!

So to everyone else I know May feels like a LOOOOONG way off. And in the mean time I should really be thinking Christmas. But to me...spring is only 90 paintings away. Next May and June, I will be showing my work at Birmingham/Bloomfield Art Center in south east Michigan (as well as a few other shows). The show  in Birmingham is entitled "Simple Roots" and I'm looking for interesting barn and farm scenes to paint. 

This is where I'm looking for input. If you have a great photograph of a country scene and you'd like to see it turned into one of my watercolors just shoot me an email!

At The Pumpkin Farm

      When I was a kid I always looked forward to our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. It took me a good hour at least to pick my pumpkin and then I had to lug it back to the car. Usually, this required Dad's help. Now that I'm grown I still try to make it yearly to get a pumpkin and carve it into a jack-o-lantern. Its always so much fun and baking the pumpkin seeds afterwards is great. When I have kids I'll carry on that tradition, until then its fun to watch other families on pumpkin day.

My newest painting for my Simple Roots series. I finished it late last night and immediately went on to another painting. Guess I was on a roll.
Also, in other news.....IT SNOWED! Now it is finally starting to feel like Christmas!

Working Farm

This barn caught my attention on my recent visit to my grandparents house. It's located outside of Battle Creek and has aged well. Acres of field surround this barn and all manner of equipment was piled up to the left among the trees. I chose to leave those old skeletons out and bring in the contrast of the blue tractor peeking around the silo. This painting will be shown with my Simple Roots series but is also available for sale. Autumn Flock

Last weekend my husband (that still sounds weird) and I went to visit my grandparents. They live in the middle of farm country and it's always very peaceful going to stay for a few days. I just couldn't resist going for a drive and seeing some of the surrounding area. That's when we came across this flock of curious sheep. I stopped the car at the side of the road and got out to take a few pictures. Every single one of them turned to look at me. So I had to wait until they lost interest to take pictures of a more "normal" setting. This painting will be shown with my Simple Roots show next spring. This little painting is currently hanging above my work station in my studio. It's a part of my Simple Roots series.

Ready To Go

I drove past this barn a few weeks ago and really honed in on this tiny section of the farm. I liked the meeting of the new and old sections of barn, the piles of dirt out front and the contrast of the green tractor. I really like the rusted doors. Not sure why that's my favorite part but it is! This painting is included in my book "Simple Roots" now available on blurb.com!

Bales

This painting called "Baling Season" is featured in my new book Simple Roots. The actual barn is located between Cadillac and Houghton Lake MI. I was out for an afternoon drive looking for painting material when I spotted it and HAD to paint it. The Harvesters

This is one of those special moments in life where everything you see here in this painting came from my memory/imagination. No photo references, no plein air painting. However, the later would have been a ton of fun.

Simple Roots

I grew up in a small town in Northern Michigan on what was a horse farm 200 years before. Now, the only hint that it was ever a farm is the big red barn out back. The fences fell down years ago, the windmill was removed and the 300 acres was sold off in parcels until my parents bought the 10 acres with the silo brick house 25 years ago. The place has a history to say the least and I have many happy memories of my childhood home.
I've started a series of sketches of barns and farm life in hopes of making a book out of them. This particular sketch is of a barn near Bridgewater MI.

Cows On 7 Mile

I went out Plein Air painting today because the sun and warm temperatures were calling my name. It was fantastic. I drove a little ways out into the country and was intrigued by a field of wallowing cows. So I stopped and painted their picture. I believe they were impressed, however, I am not fluent in cow.
This is my second time out painting En Plein Air and I have discovered a few things.
1.) I need to find something else to keep my water in so that it doesn't spill.
2.) Something besides a piece of cardboard is needed to paint on. Perhaps a BRAND NEW EASEL????
3.) I need to remember to SLOW DOWN. I have all the time in the world...why rush? Its a beautiful day and I don't need to be anywhere. The quicker I work, the sloppier it is.
Oh well....you learn with practice.
