Trees Like Fire M-119 Miniature Watercolor

"Trees Like Fire"
Miniature Watercolor Painting 2.5"x3.5"
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

Here's one more of the miniature watercolors I did of Tunnel of Trees last week. This week I have plans to do some much larger paintings. I will post my progress!
Coming up in November I have a show in Republic, Michigan at the Old Park City Gallery. The show is centered around some of the places I've enjoyed in the Republic/Marquette area. Stay tuned to check em out!

The Leaves They Are A-Changin' M-119 Miniature

"The Leaves They Are A-Changin'"
Miniature Original Watercolor 2.5"x3.5"
Available at Northgoods In Petoskey

This week I finished a couple more miniatures that I'm taking to Northgoods in Petoskey this weekend. I really enjoy painting these little bitty paintings. It's quick and stress free. I also use them as studies for larger works later on.
The leaves are changing here in northern Michigan! It's sooooo beautiful! A great place to see color is along M-119 near Harbor Springs. You can follow this road along the shores of Lake Michigan up to Sturgeon Bay Dunes if you want to! Some of my favorite stops are the Good Hart General Store and Pond Hill Farm.

M-119 Minis

Finished a few M-119 mini paintings for Northgoods in Petoskey
The leaf colors aren't quite to this level yet, but I have noticed some leaves changing! Hard to believe it's already fall. When did that happen?

Have A Great Weekend!

Petoskey Open House

Friday night was Petoskey's Open House. Their kick off for the summer season. I positioned myself outside of Northgoods and did a little painting. I met lots of very nice people. Thanks for stopping by!

Jerry was exceptionally popular with his face painting. Some folks waited quite a long time. But it was worth it.

"Relaxed By The Bay"
5"x7" Original Watercolor and Pen
This Painting Is Available At Northgoods In Petoskey

I don't always need a reference to go by. Some of my paintings are straight from my memory. Or something close to it anyway. It was fun painting this. I had forgotten over the winter how it's slightly different painting on my easel than it is at my table. Gravity has more of an affect and I had to keep catching my paint before it bled into a different section. The final result is available at Northgoods in Petoskey. How Much Is That Trillium In The Window?

"Trilliums On North Country"
16"x20" Original Watercolor and Pen on Paper
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

Over the past couple of days THIS is what has been keeping me busy. This painting is quite a bit larger than my normal work. It was a lot of erasing and re-drawing but I really like the end result. I'm hoping to do some more larger paintings in the near future.
This painting's destination is the front window at Northgoods where Anne has been working on a spring set up. When you stop by the shop be sure to mention how much you love the trilliums she made for the display!

Have a great weekend!

Sturgeon River Pottery

"Sturgeon River Pottery"
8"x10" original watercolor and pen on paper

Sturgeon River Pottery is a favorite destination place here in Petoskey. You'll know it when you see it. If you're driving from Petoskey to Charlevoix on US-31 it'll be on your left just a short drive from town.
They've been around for over 30 years now and was originally founded in Wolverine. Steve and Karen Andrews offer high quality pottery made by themselves and a select few other artists. Upstairs is a working studio where you're invited to take a peek. They have open demonstration days where you'll be sure to catch an artist at work.
Sturgeon River also offers other unique items and a wide range of wild bird supplies and outdoor furniture.
This place was a LOT of fun to paint because there is so much going on! The large metal sunflowers along the front offer wonderful little pops of color. The porch is filled with dozens of different things. I simplified it all for the sake of the painting but I hope the eclectic-ness of the place still shows through!
It's a place to check out next time you come up north!

From The Bay

"From The Bay"
8"x10" original watercolor and pen on paper

This is a view you would see if you were out on a boat in Little Traverse Bay in the summer. As you're coming into the harbor you'll pass our breakwall. The hilly town of Petoskey rises up behind it. Locals and visitors alike are enjoying the warm summer day by jumping off the end of the breakwall into the cool, deep waters of Lake Michigan.

Also, I recently switched out my paintings at Petoskey District Library. I brought in new ones so there's no more snowy pictures. If you're in the area head up to the second floor and check em out! I'd love to hear what you think!

Petoskey Breakwall Sunset #3

"Petoskey Breakwall Sunset #3"
5"x7" original watercolor and pen on paper
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

We get some gorgeous sunsets here in Petoskey. Not so much in the winter, but during the summer I love to go out onto my balcony and watch the colors in the evening. From my apartment I have a beautiful view of the bay. I can't quite see the breakwall but I can see Harbor Springs and all of the little white pin pricks that are sailboats coming in for the evening.
This view was taken from an evening walk I took last September. I was walking on the bike trail that follows the shoreline and wandered down onto the beach to capture this with my camera. It's nice to have the reference pictures come winter when you need a little color in your life.

Breakwall Sailing

"Breakwall Sailing"
8"x10" Original Watercolor and Pen on Paper
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

See? I told you I caught the bug to paint the breakwall.
I had a lot of fun painting all of the blues in this. It was refreshing to paint summer.

Petoskey Breakwall Series

"Petoskey Breakwall Sunset #2"
8"x10" original watercolor and pen on paper
Available at Pieces on Mitchell Street in Petoskey

Get ready! I've been painting different views of the Petoskey Breakwall. Every once in a while I get this obsession with something. Then I paint it and paint it and paint it until I've exhausted it. This time around it happens to be the breakwall.
Petoskey breakwall juts out into Lake Michigan. It's a popular spot for swimmer in the summer. They launch themselves off the end of it into the cold water. It's a lot of fun. People also gather to watch the sailboats float by in the summer and to watch the sunset.

Tunnel Of Trees Mini

"Tunnel Of Trees" miniature
4"x4" original watercolor and pen on paper
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

The tunnel of trees is beautiful at any time of year. Right now it would probably be quite difficult to traverse with all the weather we've been having but all of the snow laden trees are probably quite lovely.
Spring is on its way however and that means the trilliums are coming! These gorgeous little white flowers blanket the forest floor along M-119 in the spring and it is a must see! I can't wait!

Symons Mini

"Symons"
4"x4" original watercolor and pen on paper
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey

Symons is one of my favorite stores in town. But it is DANGEROUS to go into. Not in a bad way. They have sooo many yummy things to try that I NEVER come out empty handed. Out back is a cute little patio restaurant called "Chandlers" and it is an absolutely enchanting place to have lunch on a summer afternoon. And of course there's the cellar....its a wine cellar. Need I say more?
To find out more about Symons and Chandlers click here.
This painting shows Symons, on the corner of Howard and Lake Street in Petoskey. You can see Little Traverse Bay in the background.

Also, don't forget my work is currently being featured at Petoskey District Library. Stop by and check it out!

Have a great weekend!

Petoskey Breakwall Tile

"Breakwall Love"
4"x4" Original Watercolor and Pen On Paper
Painting available at Northgoods in Petoskey

It has been snowing here for the past week straight. The snow mounds outside our apartment where the plow cleared the parking lot are now taller than the lamp post. I honestly can't remember the last time there was this much snow. Though several locals have told me their stories about "the winter of '78." They have some impressive photographs; my favorite featured the road I live on with snowbanks so high you can't see the houses behind them. The road was a snow tunnel!

But despite the "cozy" weather I still feel the need to paint sunshine. It's what is getting me through honestly. This image was an idea for a tile. I'm not sure if  it will be printed yet but the little painting will be available at Northgoods in Petoskey.

Only 50 more days til SPRING!

Golden Hike

"Golden Hike"
8"x10" Watercolor on Paper
$120

Tonight at Northgoods in Petoskey a group show entitled "Colors Of Autumn" opens. Talented local artists will be displaying their fall inspired pieces. Come and see them! The show runs through the end of the month.
This is my piece that I will be entering into the show. I really enjoy walks through the autumn woods and birch trees are just the most beautiful thing come fall. The white against all the bright colors just adds to the crispness.

Pennsylvania Park Gazebo

"Pennsylvania Park Gazebo"
Watercolor and Pen
5"x7"
Available at Northgoods in Petoskey
(231) 347-1775

I like sitting in the gazebo in the park and watching the rain on warm summer days. I enjoy the water drumming gently on the roof and trickling down the woodwork. Its a comfortable feeling for me.
The gazebo also plays host to summer concerts in the park, picnicers and wedding ceremonies.

I'm currently working on a schedule for watercolor workshops and classes for this autumn/winter. I'm planning workshops and/or classes in Petoskey, Charlevoix, Gaylord and Sault Ste. Marie. If you know of a place in your town that would host a workshop I'd be glad to come to you! Just leave a comment and I'll see if I can work something out!
When I post the schedule in a few days you can find the information under "Classes and Workshops" at the top of the page.

Also, if you'd like a commission for someone as a Christmas present this year now is the time to start talking about it! For brief info look under my "Commissions" tab at the top of the page. For more information or to ask a question email me at: sarahtuleart@yahoo.com or call (248) 977-0732.
