Watching The Bay

The beaches of Northern Michigan provide me with endless inspiration. The colors and the scape of the land are so intriguing to me that I find a scene to paint where ever I am! Wouldn't you love to sit in one of these chairs for a while and just breathe in summer?

Parallel The Coast

In Northern Michigan, in the summer, there is a familiar site out on the lakes; white sails that meander up and down the shoreline, visiting the small harbor towns.
I love watching them from the beach, my toes buried in the sand and the breeze blowing around me. I could sit there for hours with my sketchbook.

Chair With A View Miniature

"Chair With A View"
2.5"x3.5" Original Miniature Watercolor
Available At Northgoods In Petoskey!

The name of this is "Chair With A View" because who wouldn't love to sit here for hours and just take it all in?
I'm thinking of doing a larger version of this painting, one I can really imagine myself being in.

My sister is in town visiting this weekend so I've pre-posted some of my recent work for galleries. That way I can spend more time with her instead of in front of the computer. I will get back to painting my Starry Animals and more next week!

Storm Coming

"Storm Coming"
7"x5" Original Watercolor On Paper

My husband and I recently headed up north for a few days to spend time with family. My husband's grandparents own a fabulous place on Lake Michigan. We were sitting out on the deck when this storm began it's way across the lake. I took several pictures to practice painting clouds and lake colors.

New Minis

This weekend I dropped off a handful of new miniature paintings at Northgoods in Petoskey. They would make a great addition to any stocking!
I have also finished my "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan" series and am looking for a venue to exhibit with. The paintings are all 2.5"x3.5" framed in white to be 5"x7." If you have a suggestion I would love to hear it! Please leave a comment!
These upcoming weeks are packed with travel and family! Looking forward to a change from the normal routine.
In case I don't make it back beforehand, I wish everyone the very best holiday and a wonderful start to 2015!

The Leaves They Are A-Changin' M-119 Miniature

"The Leaves They Are A-Changin'"
Miniature Original Watercolor 2.5"x3.5"
Available at Northgoods In Petoskey

This week I finished a couple more miniatures that I'm taking to Northgoods in Petoskey this weekend. I really enjoy painting these little bitty paintings. It's quick and stress free. I also use them as studies for larger works later on.
The leaves are changing here in northern Michigan! It's sooooo beautiful! A great place to see color is along M-119 near Harbor Springs. You can follow this road along the shores of Lake Michigan up to Sturgeon Bay Dunes if you want to! Some of my favorite stops are the Good Hart General Store and Pond Hill Farm.

Adirondack Trio Minis

A little series of mini paintings. Adirondacks on the beach.
I'm beginning to feel summer is long gone, with temps barely getting to 60 here anymore. These helped me to reflect on summer sun, warm sand and a day at the beach.
Check Northgoods in Petoskey soon for more minis!

Minis for Northgoods

Apologies for my absence here! August was a crazy month for me and with so much  going on I let a few things slip away. Now that several things have fallen in to place I will be posting more regularly again.

The above paintings are minis (2.5"x 3.5")  and are destined for Northgoods in Petoskey. They are a continuation of my series "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan" which has been very well received. Thank you to those who have purchased them! They go fast!

Also, I am teaching a set of beginners classes here in the Sault beginning on the 15th. There are a few spaces open if anyone else would like to join. Contact me at (248) 977-0732 and we'll get you all signed up!
To find out the rest of the information on this set of classes and others I'll be teaching please click on the "Workshops and Classes" tab at the top of the page.

Frozen Bay Minis

"Frozen Bay #2"
2.5"x3.5" Original Watercolor and Pen

"Frozen Bay #1"
2.5"x3.5" Original Watercolor and Pen

Here are a few more additions to my series "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan."
In stark contrast to our vibrant summer, these paintings only used 2 or 3 colors.
I can't say that I miss winter yet. I'm enjoying the sun. Yet, the series wouldn't be complete without the heaps of snow that line the shore 4 months out of the year.

Lake Michigan Sunset Minis

"Lake Michigan Sunset #1"
2.5"x 3.5" Original Watercolor And Pen

"Lake Michigan Sunset #2"
2.5"x 3.5" Original Watercolor And Pen

I struck me the other day as I was looking through the mini paintings I've completed for my series "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan," I didn't have any sunset paintings. People love the sunsets over Lake Michigan! They drive for MILES to watch the sun set over the water.
So....I decided to rectify that and paint a couple. My tiny paintings are not nearly as stunning as some of the actual sunsets I have witnessed but I hope they come close. I enjoy all of the colors that creep into the sky at the end of the day. Especially over the water.

Today is my husband's birthday! We're having a cook out!
Happy Birthday Hun! Love you!

Little Sable Lighthouse Mini

"Little Sable Lighthouse"
3.5"x 2.5" Original Watercolor And Pen

Following along with yesterday's post I will continue the lighthouse tour with Little Sable Lighhouse.
Little Sable Light is located just south of Silver Lake State Park. This lighthouse reminds me of a fairy-tale Rapunzel type tower. It looks awkward to me standing there alone on the beach.
This painting is included in my series "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan"

Big Sable Lighthouse Minis

"Big Sable Light"
3.5"x 2.5" Original Watercolor And Pen

"Big Sable Storm"
2.5"x 3.5" Original Watercolor And Pen

I felt like adding a few more to my ongoing series "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan." This time I headed down the coastline a bit to the Ludington area. Big Sable Lighthouse is located inside of Ludington State Park along the Lake Michigan shore. You can read more about it by clicking here
I've also started to do a bit more research about venues for this series of paintings. Suggestions are welcome! I'm looking fore several places along Lake Michigan.

10 days down in my 100 Day Project! 90 more to go!

Petoskey Open House

Friday night was Petoskey's Open House. Their kick off for the summer season. I positioned myself outside of Northgoods and did a little painting. I met lots of very nice people. Thanks for stopping by!

Jerry was exceptionally popular with his face painting. Some folks waited quite a long time. But it was worth it.

"Relaxed By The Bay"
5"x7" Original Watercolor and Pen
This Painting Is Available At Northgoods In Petoskey

I don't always need a reference to go by. Some of my paintings are straight from my memory. Or something close to it anyway. It was fun painting this. I had forgotten over the winter how it's slightly different painting on my easel than it is at my table. Gravity has more of an affect and I had to keep catching my paint before it bled into a different section. The final result is available at Northgoods in Petoskey. Click on the link under the picture to go to their website.

Beach Friends

"Beach Friends"
5"x7" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper

A problem some of us are struggling with here in Northern Michigan. It's 80+ degrees out but the lakes are still too cold to swim in. So instead we pack up a bag and head to the beach to stare longingly at the water.
Soon enough!

Geranium View

"Geranium View"
5"x7" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper

I enjoy taking strolls around town now that the weather is enjoyable. On Monday it rained quite a bit and it broke the humidity. So on Tuesday I went for a leisurely stroll through Bay View and down to the lake shore.
There is a little dead end road there and the name of it escapes me. But down at the end there is a low stone wall with pots of geraniums set out. Several chairs are aimed to look out over the bay and it's really all quite cheerful.

Also, I apologize if you signed up for my monthly newsletter and have not received the one for June. I had some troubles with my program and it skipped several people on the list. However, I do not know which ones got it and which didn't.  If you would like to receive it please let me know and I will send you a copy!

From The Shade

"From The Shade"
2.5"x 3.5" Original Watercolor On Paper

I like picnics. Packing up some sandwiches and heading off to a little spot with a great view. I'm looking forward to the weather getting just a bit warmer so that Tan and I can go and do that. It's just not quite comfortable enough outside most days. It is coming though!

Rocky Bay

"Rocky Bay Mini"
2.5"x 3.5" Original Watercolor On Paper

This is another painting for "100 Tiny Views Of Lake Michigan."
HOWEVER, this is the first one I've painted that is actually a view from the U.P. Ah ha! Mixing it up!
This little bay is along US-2. We found it quite by mistake one time while we were out for an adventure.
I get cabin fever. Year round, not just in the winter. Every once in a while I get the urge to get out and DO something. It usually involves a day trip to someplace I haven't been in a while. In this case we went to the Upper Peninsula.
I love making little discoveries like this. We ended up eating our lunch on those rocks, listening to the water.

I'm showing some of my tiny paintings at the Dennos Museum Center's Small Works Show in Traverse City.  The show opens May 15th with a reception from 5-8pm and runs through the weekend. Come find original works from local artists at great prices!
Have A Great Weekend!
