I had a special request for a Christmas card design after my post last week. I was so excited to make an addition to my Starry Animals series and tie in one of my favorite Christmas Songs. The title of this painting should give you a clue ;)

The beaches of Northern Michigan provide me with endless inspiration. The colors and the scape of the land are so intriguing to me that I find a scene to paint where ever I am! Wouldn't you love to sit in one of these chairs for a while and just breathe in summer?

Cheboygan Crib Lighthouse

"Cheboygan Crib Light"
7"x5" Original Watercolor On Paper
To Buy This Painting Click Here

This cute little crib lighthouse sits at the mouth of the river in my hometown. In the summer, boaters come in from Lake Huron to travel the inland waterway and the beach is packed with swimmers.
I was feeling a bit homesick so I painted this to help. It surprises me sometimes, how very much paintings are a result of emotion.

Have A Great Weekend Everyone!

Sailing Into The Light

"Sailing Into The Light"
5"x7" Original Watercolor On Paper

A friendly little sailboat, making it's way back home at sunset.
This painting gave me a feeling of peace while working on it. The blending of the colors in the sky and the dancing light on the lake's surface just soothed me. So glad to live in Michigan, surrounded by all of this water!

Also, if you're looking for a fun night out with some friends, how about learning watercolor? I'm teaching a class in St. John's Michigan on the 22nd!

Christmas Cards 2015

I know it's REALLY early to be posting this but I just finished my 2015 Christmas Card designs. They are available now for ordering if you're ready to embrace the season. For everyone else, there is a button that will be in the side bar >>>>>>
to purchase at a future date.
I really like how these turned out. I think out of all the Christmas cards I've created these are probably my favorites! (not to sound vain or anything...)

Parallel The Coast

In Northern Michigan, in the summer, there is a familiar site out on the lakes; white sails that meander up and down the shoreline, visiting the small harbor towns.
I love watching them from the beach, my toes buried in the sand and the breeze blowing around me. I could sit there for hours with my sketchbook.

Back to work in the studio now, however, and here is the first painting. What better way to spend these dog days of summer than by sailing at sunset?

Chair With A View Miniature

"Chair With A View"
2.5"x3.5" Original Miniature Watercolor
Available At Northgoods In Petoskey!

The name of this is "Chair With A View" because who wouldn't love to sit here for hours and just take it all in?
I'm thinking of doing a larger version of this painting, one I can really imagine myself being in.

My sister is in town visiting this weekend so I've pre-posted some of my recent work for galleries. That way I can spend more time with her instead of in front of the computer. I will get back to painting my Starry Animals and more next week!

Storm Coming

"Storm Coming"
7"x5" Original Watercolor On Paper

My husband and I recently headed up north for a few days to spend time with family. My husband's grandparents own a fabulous place on Lake Michigan. We were sitting out on the deck when this storm began it's way across the lake. I took several pictures to practice painting clouds and lake colors.

We Made It!

"We Made It!"
5"x7" Original Watercolor And Pen On Paper
Available at the Fuzzy Boyak Welcome Center in Munising, MI

This was a fun painting to do! I've been working on drawing people (something I was never very good at) and I dare say I've made a bit of progress. These happy hikers have reached the end of the trail and are overjoyed with their success! They did it! They walked the whole thing!

Glen Arbor Show

This past weekend I spent some time in Glen Arbor Michigan. I had a solo show at the Glen Arbor Art Association . It was a great experience. The space itself was nice and bright and airy with some great views of the surrounding forest. Very inspiring place to paint. Hopefully I will be doing more with GAAA in the future! Below is an image of the exhibit space with my easel all set up. I was making use of my time and getting some more painting done!
And the other image is something an artist always likes to see: sold work :)

Trees Like Fire

Ok! Time for another "Work In Progress!" This one is of Round Island Lighthouse in the autumn. Enjoy!

I begin with a pencil sketch that I go over with my handy dandy Faber-Castell pen. This pen is waterproof and won't bleed. Now I basically have a coloring book page more or less. Not so daunting now is it?

First, I chose to paint in the sand, bringing the color down into the waterline so you can discern where the shallow areas are.

While I was waiting for the sand to dry I picked an area that didn't touch it: the trees. Wouldn't want those colors to bleed together! But, speaking of bleeding colors, I began with a golden yellow and quickly added orange and reds to the trees so that they blended together instead of being blotchy. Once the sand was dry I painted the water and the rocks, adding a bit of gray to the water. Remember! It's still a bit shallow there!

Then I finished the pine trees on shore, the roof and the windows.

Finally, I painted the flag, the lighthouse and the shadows. I also added a bit of red to the water for the lighthouse reflection. Voila!

I hope this was informational to you if nothing else. But every once in a while I like to show my process. If you have any questions you can contact me at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com

This painting will be for sale at Mackinac's Little Gallery on Mackinac Island. Be sure to stop in there when you visit the Island this summer! It's a fantastic little gallery! To purchase this painting you can contact them at (906) 847-6400.

Also, check out my "Classes and Workshops" tab at the top of the page. I've added some new workshops!
