Feelin' Bookish

Above is an illustration I have been working on for a children's book that I'm writing. I really wanted to get it finished for my booth this weekend at EUP Bookfest where I will be offering my services as an illustrator.
The first annual Eastern Upper Peninsula Book Fest is this Saturday, Sept 20th from 9am-3pm at Faith Lutheran Church in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. There will be over 20 Upper Peninsula authors present, all reading from and promoting their books.
If you come you can see more of my illustrations and hear about my upcoming book!
Please come support the local authors! We'd love to see you!

Bright Sunny Colors

This particular barn is located in Sault Ste. Marie MI. I noticed it several times while living there but it wasn't until a friend of mine sent me a picture of it did I really feel the need to paint it.
Now, I believe I may have gone overboard with the colors but it certainly does make the picture quite bright. I tried to go for a sunset feel but failed to pick a direction of light. There's shadows going every which way. Despite this, I love this painting. I still think it will be included in my barn series book.

Ghostly Tours

Some friends of mine from Sault Ste. Marie are terrific storytellers. They host a walking tour in Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace MI that I highly recommend. It's called the Lantern Light Mystery Tour and its about the history of the area as well as some of the local haunts and hauntings. I did some sign commissions for them and just dropped them off today. I hope they have a great turn out this year as they're fantastic people with wonderful story telling abilities. Check out their website for more information on the tours at: Twilight Walking Tours

Cows On 7 Mile

I went out Plein Air painting today because the sun and warm temperatures were calling my name. It was fantastic. I drove a little ways out into the country and was intrigued by a field of wallowing cows. So I stopped and painted their picture. I believe they were impressed, however, I am not fluent in cow.
This is my second time out painting En Plein Air and I have discovered a few things.
1.) I need to find something else to keep my water in so that it doesn't spill.
2.) Something besides a piece of cardboard is needed to paint on. Perhaps a BRAND NEW EASEL????
3.) I need to remember to SLOW DOWN. I have all the time in the world...why rush? Its a beautiful day and I don't need to be anywhere. The quicker I work, the sloppier it is.
Oh well....you learn with practice.
