Charlevoix Class

I just got home from teaching an Introduction To Watercolors class today at Charlevoix Circle Of Arts. If you're interested in taking a class check out my "Workshops and Classes" tab at the top of the screen!
On Monday I return to teach again in Republic, near Marquette Michigan. I also have plans in the works to come back and teach in Charlevoix and in June I'll be teaching in Boyne at Elvyn Lea Lodge.

I'm working on several paintings at the moment so check back soon to see those!

Horton Bay General Store

First of all, for those of you that came to listen to my lecture last night at Charlevoix Circle Of Arts thanks so much for being there! I hope you had a good time and I enjoyed meeting and talking with you!
Secondly, in case you missed the lecture, part of what I talked about was my process. I know I've done posts on this in the past but I figured it was time for a new one. Many people tell me that it's interesting to see an artist's process and while it's everyday work to me, I do enjoy watching artists in other mediums work their magic. So if you'd like to see the process from start to finish on my latest painting "Horton Bay General Store" you can scroll through the images below.

Horton Bay General Store is a neat stop if  you're ever in the Petoskey/Charlevoix area. Located off of Horton Bay Rd, it shares a history with Ernest Hemingway, who spent much of his youth on nearby Walloon Lake and eventually got married in the tiny Horton Bay church. Mr. Hemingway references this store in his "Nick Adams" stories and it is part of the "Hemingway Heritage Trail" in the area.
This finished painting will be for sale soon at Northgoods in Petoskey.

The first step is penciling the whole thing in. I remove/add things from the reference photos and shuffle some things around.

When I have everything situated where I want it, I go over the pencil with my handy-dandy nano-liner pen. This pen is waterproof and won't blur when I add the watercolor.

Then I start coloring everything in like a coloring book. Some of the shading I add while the first layer is still wet so that it will bleed in to each other and have a softer effect. I skip around in my paintings (you can see I painted the sky and then moved to the bottom) and that's so I can keep working while I wait for areas to dry.

I slowly fill in and shade all of the areas. Sometimes, it takes several layers of paint to get the vibrant colors I like.

And voila! The finished painting! So nice to see the vibrant greens of summer (and lilacs!) while I'm waiting for the snow to melt.

Fly Fishing

In the past I painted a few trout flies and they were well received. I've recently had some inquiries for more. These are two that I completed this evening. My favorite one is the top image.
These images are 2.5"x3.5" and are matted to fit in a 5"x7" frame. They will be for sale at Park City Gallery in Republic, MI. To purchase them from the gallery call (906) 376-2360 or you can email me at sarahtuleart@yahoo.com or call me at (248) 977-0732.

Last night I taught an Introduction To Watercolors class at Park City Gallery in Republic Michigan. We had so much fun! It was a nice way to fend off a cold winter night here in the U.P. Can not wait for spring to get here!
I go back to teach a second class on the 16th. If you're interested in joining us please contact the gallery at (906) 376- 2360.

Couldn't Keep Away

Every creative person will tell you...strike that, almost anyone you could meet on the street will tell you, that in life there are high points and there are low points. For a creative person, sometimes adding too much to their plate can turn them away from their craft. We come to the easel, or the table and look at the blank paper before us and it all suddenly seems like too much. When artists are blocked (in my experience) it's because they are too overwhelmed. Mind you, having exhibits to plan for and classes to teach and commissions waiting is the whole point. It's what we work for our whole careers. But sometimes we bite off too much at a time, get caught up in the excitement of it all, and then find that we are dragging our feet to the studio. We'd rather do anything besides what we love most.
This is something I have been struggling with for the past year or so. Having enough work to keep busy but not so much that I feel like I'll never catch up. So as 2015 rolled in, I decided to step away from painting for a while and see how I felt. At first, it was a relief. My schedule was far more open and the house was suddenly a lot cleaner. But as time wore on and it drew closer and closer to February I started to get that itch to create. So I made a quilt. And then I wrote a few stories. I researched how to do block printing and silk screening. I played around with pastels. I began taking violin lessons. A few times, I got out my palette and set myself up to paint. I would get half way through a painting and lose interest. I wasn't ready to return to that yet.
Then, shortly after Valentine's day, a myriad of things began to happen to me. I was contacted by several establishments to teach classes, I was invited to give a lecture, a friend offered to sell my paintings in their shop and I realized that it was about this time each year that I would have been  getting new work to galleries.  It was as if someone re-lit my pilot light.
For the past two weeks I have been happily painting. I spend my mornings keeping up with household chores and then after lunch I sit down at the table and get out a painting to work on. I've allowed it to be a slow process. When I get frustrated I step away for a bit. True, I'm not turning out as many paintings as I was before but I'm looking at the long term. I want to do this for years to come. I had always looked at it as a sprint: the sooner I obtained "success" as a painter the sooner I would be somewhere safe. But it's really all about enjoying the process and setting goals to achieve. Somewhere, somehow, I had forgotten that.
I think I'm on the right path now, and have several things planned in the coming weeks. You can find those listed below.
Thanks for coming to look at my site. I'll be posting more regularly now so be sure to check back.
I hope everything is going great for you and remember to give yourself a break every once in a while! Keep your chin up!
